Accurate weighing of micrograms is no longer difficult

In the biomedical field, when formulating high-performance liquid chromatography solutions, some standards are on the order of milligrams or even micrograms, while microbalances for weighing require microgram quality standards to guarantee their accuracy. Recently, the reporter learned from the China Institute of Metrology that the institute successfully developed two sets of micro-gram quality standards and one set of micro-gram quality measurement system, which filled the gap in the measurement capacity of China's micro-gram quality standards and constructed a micro-gram quality traceability system.


    For international trade, quality measurement plays an important role; and the exploration of the micro-world in the fields of new materials, micro-nano processing, and biomedicine is challenging the accuracy and limits of quality and force measurement. In order to reproduce and transfer the microgram quality and establish the measurement capability that can be traced back to the international unit system, China Metrology Institute and Tianjin University jointly carried out research on microgram quality and micro-nano force measurement standards. The research team has independently developed quality measurement standards and automatic measurement systems of 500 micrograms, 200 micrograms, 100 micrograms and 50 micrograms.


    The project leader and researcher Hu Gang of China Metrology Institute introduced that the measurement uncertainty of one of the microgram quality measurement standards established by the team at 50 μg mass point is better than 0.094 μg (k=2). This is equivalent to recurring one thousandth of the mass of a drop of water (0.05g), and the uncertainty does not exceed one-hundred thousandth of the mass of the drip.


    In addition to recurring and delivering microgram quality, the research team also made a major breakthrough in the accurate traceability of micro-nano force values. "In the field of microelectronics, the constitutive relationship between microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) devices and packaging materials, mechanical properties and physical properties such as thermal expansion coefficient, Young's modulus, etc., also urgently require accurate traceability of micro-nano force values."     Under the support of the National Science and Technology Support Program “Micro-nano Technology Measurement Standards and Reference Materials Research” project, the research team developed a micro-nano force standard device with a range of force values (10-8—10-4)N, which filled the micro-nano in China. The force value standard measurement capability is blank. "With this standard set of devices, the force resolution can reach 1nN, and the relative value of the force value in the range of (1-10) μN does not exceed 0.4%." Hu Gang told reporters.


    “It is both sensitive and accurate.” Hu Gang explained, “To achieve such sensitivity and accuracy at the same time, high requirements are imposed on the measurement method. It is necessary to analyze and reduce the deformation of the measuring mechanism and the environment to cause measurement results.
